Hornets and Wasps have an instinctive need to build nests. During the time that this process is underway, they can be seen carving away at wood in order to create space for its new home.
Hornets are known for their ability to carve out homes from logs and fences with ease using only mandibles as tools. They will often use venomous stings when feeling threatened by humans or other animals during these early stages of construction
The exterior of your house is a major attraction for wasps. Eaves, soffits, and gutters all make an excellent place to set up their home. Flowers are even more appealing if they provide nectar or pollen while patios with crumbs from dinner will have you seeing them at every turn! That's not where it stops though - garbage cans that aren't covered can be just as much trouble because the food inside will attract these pests too; providing ample opportunities for developing insects and spiders to become prey in no time flat!
Homeowners Beware!
The bald-faced hornets can be found in our area and have proven to be particularly aggressive. They are larger than yellow jackets and have a distinctively white face and three stripes on the back of their body. They are non-pollinating and extremely territorial. If you find a nest, contact a professional as they will sting multiple times, and reactions to their stings can range from severe to deadly.
